Appearance: PIH typically appears as flat, discoloured patches that correspond to the site of previous inflammation. The affected areas can range from light brown to black in colour
Causes: Acne, injuries, dry skin, insect bites
Mechanism: In response to inflammation, melanocytes (the cells that produce pigment) increase the production of melanin.

Sun/Age Spots (Solar Lentigenies)
Appearance: Solar lentigines, commonly known as age spots or liver spots, are flat, brown, or black spots that appear on the skin.These benign lesions are most commonly found on sun-exposed areas such as the face, hands, shoulders, and arms.
Causes: Sun exposure, aging
Mechanism: UV rays penetrate the skin, causing DNA damage in the epidermal cells. The damaged cells release signaling molecules that stimulate melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin, the skin pigment.
